Progress Report

◊ Posted by A β Pseudolonewolf
I didn't write a Weekly Update this week, apparently, so I thought I may as well inform you of what's going on with Miasmon...

Beta testing is still going on, and there are many bugs to fix, graphics to add, mechanics to change... so that's going to take quite a bit of time, I'm afraid.

What's going to take even more time though is completely writing the plot. It seems that the current plot was inadequate to the testers, something that I don't disagree with, so I'd like to rewrite it.
I'd use the same 'ingredients' and everything - the characters that I've developed, the world, and of course the mechanics, graphics, etc; all the assets that I've made.
But the plot probably does need rewriting since it has no central conflict to it, or goals, and doesn't really go anywhere at the moment. It'll be a rearranging of parts rather than starting with a clean slate.

This is a set-back, and will make testing take even longer, but hopefully it'll produce a better game.

I'm not sure that I can give an estimation of how long anything will take, though. I'm halfway through planning a better plot at the moment.

Also, aren't Blurbs such wonderful things? Yes, THAT was totally a great idea. Looking at my own blurbs page makes me feel so happy, so glad to have made this site and to spend time here.

I can't believe that this post was made a year ago... It's so hard to recall the beta tests of Miasmon...

Puesdolonewolf, can we expect a August release of this game? I just wondering, that all.

I'm actually a bit surprized to hear about this struggle. Although I only say that because I consider the amount of detail and such that you put into Mardek to be rather genius. I love how your games tend to have such a great plot, yet still maintain all the great things such as the gameplay and great pixel graphics. I really consider you to be my favorite game maker(Although I don't completly like you as a person, not that that matters). I've considered making games in my future, but I'd never beable to be at your level, expecially since I have no talent for art and music, so I'd need help for that part. Although you really should have you game sold to individuals. I mean, I've played plenty of single player RPGs that are sold for around 20$ to a individual. Some of them are better when it comes to graphics, but I haven't played anything as of yet that matches your plots(Which in my opinion is the most important part). :/ Still keep up the good work and I'll look foreword to playing your future games!
On a side note, how much do you make a year in donations about? I'm just curious. I mean I'm not willing to donate anything at this point, afterall considering my age I still want to be sure that I have money stored away for anything I may need it for. College for example. Although I would like to contribute edventually, afterall your games are one of a kind.

Regarding blurbs: I think they may be a good idea, but have perhaps not been well implemented. You describe their intended use as "to praise or criticise, with the intention of telling the person what they're doing right or wrong here, or just to tell them things you'd be too scared or embarrassed to say directly". That's good. But the current implementation makes them operate (at least from a 's perspective) more as a pecking-order device: a way to praise someone and make him feel proud, or shame him and make him feel humiliated. Perhaps you should consider changing them in one or both of the following ways:

- Make blurbs private. Nobody else needs to know what ratio of positive or negative blurbs a given individual has received, or what other people have said to that individual; people should make up their own minds, rather than just mindlessly hating whomever the community hates and loving whomever the community loves. Also, public criticism is more hurtful than private criticism; insofar as the goal is just for users to receive honest criticism of their performance, I don't know why you'd want to make it gratuitously hurtful. Some people may even be using blurbs just to be hurtful, and some of those people would stop doing it if the blurbs were private. And, lastly, hearing the same advice from ten different people is more informative if you know that those people did not read one another's advice before submitting their own.

- Add a button to let a user delete blurbs about himself which he's read and doesn't feel that he would benefit from ever reading again. (Or maybe the ability to return them to the anonymous sender with a brief reply such as "thanks for your comment", "message received; I'll think about it", "I'm sorry you feel that way", "do you think I've changed any since you posted this?", or "why would you post something like this? if you were just trying to make me feel bad, you succeeded", removing them from your profile at least until the sender decides to repost them.) Mean flames and empty flattery don't need to be obsessed over and read dozens of times, forever distracting attention from the constructive criticism that you do intend to do something about or the praise that you're especially proud of. And it's upsetting to have things on one's profile that one can't control.

(Note: in suggesting these changes to the blurb feature, I don't mean to imply that you haven't already thought of them yourself. I just mean to be expressing my request that they be considered, and opening discussion about whether such changes would be improvements.)

Well, I'd say that you could take some points somewhat like Pokemon (I mean with this having an Starter Pokemon and some sort Rival). As well, you could make the plot focused on the destruction of the planet caused by an Evil force of some sort (It could be Miasma or such).

But anyway It's your game not mine.

By the way, you are making a great work with this, carry on and take your time, the more time you take making and fixing this game the better results can get of it.

I wasn't looking for suggestions, and I've already had the general gist of the thing planned for ages... The difficult part is deciding on specific events that happen between the important things.
Like how the plot of Pokemon (Generation I) was 'collect all the badges, become the champion, stop Team Rocket'. But then there are details like being unable to get into the Vermillion Gym until you go on the SS Anne and get Cut, stopping Team Rocket in Mt Moon specifically, and so on. The wiggles in an otherwise straight line towards your ultimate goal.

Plot is central! I hope you'll be able to come up with a good one. I wonder if creating a plot for a game is easier or harder than making one for say... a story or comic.

Maybe it's less difficult, in a way, because you can pad a lot of it with gameplay, going long stretches without any plot developments, whereas with literature or comics, the story is constantly present.

True... but you have to try and put in really significant things whenever you reach a certain checkpoint and such. I almost want to play three or so RPG games just to see how the stories work in them O.o
But I suppose both would need the prior creation of a plot before actually making the story/comic/game.... like a story board or something.

I can't tell if your comment about the blurbs was being sarcastic or not. I hope not, but I know how harsh criticism can be for someone.

His comment about the blurbs was sarcastic, and I definitely understand where he's coming from.

The blurbs are a good idea "on paper." However, just because something is good in theory does not mean that it is good in practice. Many negative blurbs are harsh, many positive blurbs aren't serious, many neutral blurbs aren't neutral, and a good number of all of those blurbs are outdated. Just look at my two.

Please, take your time on making the plot. To run out of patience is easy, but making a story is difficult. I would hate to see effort gone to waste because you had to "rush" the story, or any other part of the game. I understand that making something good takes time.

Ps: I would like to know what site is sponsoring your game when it is done. While it's probable that you will place it on Kongregate, you may have also considered different options, like finally starting your plan to sell your games on your own site.

After loving the Mardek series and CBC, I can't imagine the game not having a great plotline, but maybe now, it'll be even better.

Thank you for the update on the status of Miasmon. I, honestly, don't mind if you need to re-write the plot; as you said, a better game will be produced! I've already waited for a while, so a little more waiting won't hurt. Not to mention, it might give me time to finally finish MARDEK 3! (That is, if my save file isn't deleted again.)

And as for the blurbs, I understand what you mean.

EDIT: I know what he means. I meant "I understand your position."

By blurbs, I think he means the reviews that other people have written for his account.
