Miasmon Bestiary 22: Palaeos

◊ Posted by A β Pseudolonewolf

Game Information

Types: Undead / Stone
Stage: Transient

Like its prevolution, Ammos, much of its bony body is encased within stone, yet it's still capable of movement. It thrashes and lashes out with its stony claws and rows of fossil fangs.

Design Notes

I'm not yet 100% certain about this design, so the sprite in the game may have some differences to this. I went through many sketches before deciding on this, but I 'decided' mainly due to not wanting to spend more time on it rather than because I was satisfied with it.

It's notably similar to the 'Demonolith' enemies from Final Fantasy X, and I 'used them for inspiration' (that is, stole ideas from them). However, I came up with the initial idea (dinosaur skeleton reaching out from the rock it's still in) before I remembered it'd already been done.

It's obvious that everyone will prefer Sporc to this. Why, I don't know why I even bothered uploading it, since it obviously can't compare!

Its name comes from 'palaeo-' meaning 'prehistoric', and 'os' meaning 'bone'.

Miasmon Bestiary 21: Ammos

Game Information

Types: Undead / Stone
Stage: Essent

A monster that resembles some kind of fossil. Much of its body is encased in stone, but it can somehow propel itself with clunky little jumps and snap out with its fanged skull.

Design Notes

This is another one that I made the sprite of a while ago, which I've drawn now for the sake of adding it and its evolution.

It's based on an ammonite fossil combined with a generic dinosaur skull to create a sort of snake thing. I wonder how many teenagers would point out to me that ammonites were actually cephalopods though, as if I don't know.

I was really into dinosaurs when I was little and even wanted to be a palaeontologist... so I like the idea of adding monsters based on actual fossils. I always liked the fossil Pokemon, but this is a bit more direct about the whole 'fossil' thing.

No, you don't acquire this by reviving it from a fossil item. They live in the wild.

Miasmon Bestiary 20: Sporc

Game Information

Types: Humanoid / Plantoid
Stage: Transient

The evolved form of Fungoblin. They carry their three-pronged 'spear' everywhere with them, and use it gracelessly in combat. They smell extremely strongly of mud and mushrooms.

Design Notes

Fungoblin originally evolved straight into a Prime form called 'Sporgre', but I've added this form between the two. Goblin to Orc to Ogre seems a sensible progression to me.

Its name is based on 'spore' and 'orc'... but since it sounded so much like 'spork', I gave it one as a weapon. It's likely that'll be the most notable feature about it.

It has moss rather than hair on its arms since it's part plantoid.

I bet you're all just dying to train this sexy beast. It will certainly top everyones' favourite monsters lists.
