A very cool application of the placebo effect is Alcohol Expectation. Apparently, pretty much everything people think alcohol does to them, such as increase in sexual behavior, dishinibition, increase in agressivity, expression of feelings, and so on... is all really a big commercialized placebo effect. The only thing it was proved to do is to diminish motor skills and reflexes, and similar things.

In cultures where it is popular belief that alcohol has certain effects, it has those effects, and in other cultures where it's not popular belief, it doesn't have those effects. Experiments were lead with people drinking unalcoolized tonic drinks, who were believing they were drinking alcohol, and the effects were the same as if they were "drunk".

It's on wikipedia... O_o

Are you Implying, that the alcohol side affect which we all should know of, and will eventually experience is just an old wives tale that we were all tricked into believing?! Or are you simply stating something you found on Wikipedia? ...for some reason, that whole response I just gave sounded a bit like something an NPC in MARDEK would say...

Well ain't that cool. Does that mean that anything that is said to do anything but doesn't actually do it will do it? Then how come my holy water doesn't make me a ghost then? I've always been drinking it, and so far, my body is 0% ethereal. ;=;

My mistake, I should have taken into account, the assholes who enjoy picking fun at science. No, it will not kill you, unless you truly BELIEVE it, and you were raised in an area, in which no one doubted it would work. Plus, your mind may be able to kill your body, but it can't kill itself! And, so you can't turn it around on me, YES, the mind may heal it self, but it cannot kill itself by simply believing that it can... And damn, this is getting confusing isn't it?
<EDIT: Oh, who am I kidding... no one will ever truly appreciate science in the way I do. I don't regret saying this,(although I'm 75% sure I will), but really, there isn't much more I care about in this intercourseed up world other than science and technology, which thankfully go hand in hand, so what ever, I know some one will insult me or attempt to make me feel bad by degrading my work, and studies...but I've stopped caring... really I have. there are far too many people out there who pick and pick and pick all the intercourseing time on me and my work, so what ever. I don't care anymore.>

....What the hell are you talking about? O_o
I was making a simple joke. Nothing more. Judging from your post, I'd say you're getting a bit froth mouthed for no reason.

Haha! yes, I do get angry quite easily when my "More Angry" Personality is in charge! I am dearly sorry, as I have a feeling that this sort of thing will happen very often! Though please remember, not everyone takes jokes the same way. I only wish that I could get rid of these stupid emotions. As for some reason, about a year ago, my emotions were so mixed up, apparently, they had created their own personality. I've been bullied all my life, and now after holding them all in for so long, they are now different versions of me... unbelieveable, I know, but this is the truth. and I'm afraid that the Tim you were speaking to was the "Angry Tim". so sorry.

Hmm, well, I can see were you're coming from. I don't blame ya. Just remember that if something is silly here, it's probably a joke.

The Placebo Effect, is a state of mind, which can be used for good or for evil. As many know, the mind is an extremely powerful part of us, It has to be in order to keep something as complex as the human body in working order. The Placebo Effect takes advantage of this, by getting the subject to truly BELIEVE in what is told will happen. If you were raised during the olden times, when magic was believed to exist, and people were burned for it; if a person claimed to be a witch doctor, or something similar, then pretended to curse you, you WOULD believe you had been cursed. And because of that curse, you would die, a slow and terrible death, as your mind believes that you have been cursed, so it's (without meaning to), causing your body and mind to decay and die just as it would if magic DID exist. It also works the other way, meaning if you had a disease that no one knew how to cure (and didn't know anything about it other than the symptoms) then they would "preform" a false curing process in order to get you to believe you were cured; and your mind would heal itself as well as your body. Also, ironically, there have many occasions in which The Placebo effect was used to counteract itself, for good or for evil purposes. (Mind you, this technique is now only ever used on younger people, and is not effective with everyone, and all diseases.)
Truly fascinating, isn't it? the Human mind is a marvel.
