...And the hookerfication of Elwyen continues!! It's almost like A β Pseudolonewolf wants us to dislike her character now. :(

A β Pseudolonewolf said:
Of the playable characters, Legion, Solaar, Zach and Meraeador have all had their names changed; the latter two only slightly but the other two completely!

(Emphasis mine.)

I could see Zach being a woman. It would certainly surprise a lot of people! Zach's name will also change "slightly", which could indicate a genderswap.

So apparently Zach is staying, but is... different:

A β Pseudolonewolf said:
As for the Zach character, well... That'll be a surprise, I'm sure. I didn't want to stick with a gruff mute though, so that character speaks more and also has some significant story involvement.

I'm not sure if people who like Zach will like the new Zach, but we'll see. I'm just glad he won't be bland anymore!

A β Pseudolonewolf has also mentioned every character except for Vehrn and Sslen'ck, so one of them has to be cut. I can see why A β Pseudolonewolf might do either!

On the one hand, Vehrn is a strawman: he exists mostly to make fun of Christians. A β Pseudolonewolf might want to cut Vehrn for that reason, especially since he isn't as... atheistic as he once was. Vehrn would be easy to integrate into Alora Fane, though...

On the other hand, Sslen'ck is a generic character who isn't particularly relevant after the first three dungeons (Sun Temple, Sandflow Caves, Dark Temple). The Blatantly Evil Chancellor might have been important later on, but he could have been a red herring instead.

That issss, I meant to sssssay, 'Welcome back, *ssssssir*'.

Also, Solaar is a woman now! I kind of expected that, to be honest. I mean, aruans no longer exist, so xe will need a gender. May as well be female, to balance the party out.

I'm pretty A β Pseudolonewolf intends to cut Zach. He's an optional party member in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, which makes him the least important character. I think I can explain the "unpopular" comment as well.

Different people play video games for different reasons, and A β Pseudolonewolf says that character interactions are important to him. Zach doesn't really interact with anybody, so A β Pseudolonewolf probably doesn't like the character much. Because A β Pseudolonewolf is a human being with biases, he probably thinks that other people dislike Zach as well.

Parenting is something that interests me, even though I don't have kids right now. I think the subject affects everybody, even if they despise children, because everybody was a child at some point. It has to do with morality, and introduces questions like "What does it mean to be a 'good' person?". It also brings up questions like "How should children be treated?".

Anyway, this thread has very little to do with any of that! Instead, I'd like you to discuss this question: What do you think the primary goal of every parent should be?

The emphasis here is important. A person can have many different goals as a parent, but I'm talking about the most important one! I'm also talking about your own personal beliefs, not something generic like "Don't put your kid on a rocket ship bound for Mars without packing any food."

What's my opinion? I'm not going to tell you! Why? Because:
a) I don't want to influence you, or put sublimobeyinal messages in your heads.
b) I'm not entirely sure what I think (I have some ideas, but they aren't very concrete yet).
c) As a result of b), my answer would probably sound really stupid compared to yours!

So now that I've introduced this thread in a hopefully-not-inflammatory-or-idiotic manner, what do you guys think? (I couldn't think of a good poll for this thread, sorry. You're going to have to write a response, like some sort of caveperson!)

∞ Here's a relevant PDF, with statistics about the video game industry. ∞ It was written in 2012 by ∞ the Entertainment Software Association ∞, which focuses exclusively on the United States. It might be out of date, and it might not be accurate about other countries, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt.

According to that document, about 49% of U.S. households own a dedicated game console. A gaming PC isn't used exclusively for gaming (as far as I know) so the actual percentage might be higher. Additionally, about 47% of gamers are female.

Those numbers were likely much lower in the past, but I don't think the number of female gamers today is a problem. I think the number of female developers is, and I think our societal bias is an even worse one.

According to ∞ this article ∞, women make up only 20% of the number of people employed by video game companies. Most of those jobs are in nontechnical fields like public relations. In fact, women account for only 11% of game designers and 3% of programmers.

As a result, most video games are made from a male perspective. Female characters are unrealistic and oversexualized, and frequently not playable at all. All of this fosters the idea that women should look, act, and think in certain ways.

Worst of all is the society surrounding video games. For whatever reason, it seems like the majority of women who play video games stay silent. If a man tries to talk about any of this, then they're a "∞ White Knight ∞", and just trying to have sex. If a woman tries to talk about any of this, then they're a "∞ Feminazi ∞", and hate all men everywhere.

Of course, that's not what you really asked. What you asked is a more fundamental question: should women "stay in the kitchen", so to speak? Is their progression from almost property to fully-fledged members of society safe? Are gender roles natural, or are they constructed? Are individuals the way they are by nature, or do they develop by the guidance of those around them and society in general? Nature, or nurture?

I don't have any of the answers, but I tend toward the "nurture" side of things.

I have no problem, but maybe we could leave Gregan behind? Gregan was very near death when Robinson got to him. Worse, Robinson only had about 10 minutes to treat the boy. (And that's presuming {YOUR NAME} was in their room for 7 minutes, which is a bit of a stretch.)

I don't think someone that injured would be safe to move, especially not in a fleeing-for-your-life sort of way. (Besides, I have... I mean... um... *ahem*. Nice, uh, weather...?)

That aside, I think Robinson would be the best character to play as, until we get {YOUR NAME} back. He's a normal human being! Sure, he's in the military, but as a doctor (combat medic, whatever). It would be really interesting to see what somebody who isn't some super-galactic-super-soldier, or the destined protagonist of destiny thinks about this mess.
