While I don't intend to finish the Miasmon prototype, I do intend to finish the game in some form or another, and so I've been working on it over this past week. I wrote about my progress here: ∞ LINK ∞

Just sort of a PSA, but there's a new Miasmon update on Alora Fane (from this week, not last) if you click the link in this blog post :)

Sounds like its coming along nicely, I really do hope you can finish it and I will probably buy it wherever it gets released if it does. Have you thought about maybe putting it on steam? Greenlight costs $100 to put a product on which might deter people but if it gets greenlit then you're pretty much set since steam has a lack of Creature based RPG's.

It's been a while since I've commented on any of your blog posts but I just wanted to tell you once again that I am really appreciative of the effort you're putting into all your projects. I support you 100% and I'm glad that it seems like you've got a bit more bounce to your step lately so to speak. I was always excited for Miasmon ever since I enjoyed playing Beast Signers, which is similar in gameplay. I am happy that you're working on it again; I've been trying not to play the current version so that I can fully enjoy the completed experience!

I'm also looking forward to Alora Fane, and I know you've been thinking about putting a price tag on it and I just want to say there's nothing wrong with that. You put your heart and soul into what you do and getting a bit of a reward out of it is definitely not too much to ask. I'd certainly throw 5 or 10 bucks easy if only to support your aspirations.

I don't know if you read the comments on Fig Hunter anymore, but I hope you do so that you can see people that have been your fans for years. I've always wished I could do what you do; keep up the good work man.

i know this would be nothing but a selfish request but when i played miasmon here a few days ago, i really liked the part when you could control you own monster in the first scepter dungeon. so i was wondering if you could keep some part of it for the final version, i think it would be really appealing to players that they play as they own favorite monsters and for me who played many games, maybe 1 or 2 to do something like that in the "rpg/adventure" games.

maybe you could do a side quest where you meet a speaking monster (like maybe when you meet soalar in mardek 3, sorry if the name's, my memory isn't so great haha) that accept to take you to a monster only place (probably after beating/saving him) but in this place the human wouldn't be able to come because of some barriers or things that prevent them to come. and so the monster you met would become the leader and you would choose the monster that accompany him. the monster only place would be some dungeon scattered accross the world (the monster would be a rival but gradually become a friend or something) or maybe a sort of mini-world for monsters only where you would have a town some dungeons and a temple of some sort that would "conclude" this mini world.

and maybe the dungeon would have some requirement to finish them, like a monster who can swim, or one who can see in the dark etc ... (in pokemon that'd be surf, flash ...)
and maybe being in this monster only place, it would give some sort of bonus, like +1 atk to beast, +1def to warrior etc ... and here you would find skills that can't be found anywhere else and they would give some evolution you can't have otherwise cause of the skills.

well, overall, i think it would be really great :) but i don't know if it'd be too much work to do it but if you like the idea and want to use it, i'll gladly let you use it :)

good luck on your work and on your life too (if that really needed, you seem a bit happier recently so i hope you can continue being happy :) )

This looks very promising to me, and to a lot of lurkers here, I bet. It's nice to hear you in a good mood, and I hope things continue on like this. Reading the whole thing made me eager for more. I really had no questions or anything, just more desire to play the game. The sprites look amazing, the drawings good, and the other lore and things intriguing. I hope things continue this well for you!

Only the one in the lead would participate in battles

Have you considered making non-combat skills so the other two chars could use their monsters to help with the digging and research? Replaying MARDEK reminded me that some monsters there had a skill literally called "Excavate".

Each Essent species has a big list of up to 30 skills that it can 'buy', and you can fill that monster's perianth with any six of these that you can afford. The more powerful ones are more expensive, of course.

As an example, the monster Modestoat might take on the form of Sinistoat when equipped with Scorn (Destruction) and Spook (Fear), while it would take on the form of Erminerd when equipped with, uh... Behave (Bliss) and Learn (Creation). Or something.

That... is a LOT of combinations. We're talking thousands of forms for each Essent species.

I had this exact same issue back in 2011, where my initial drawings didn't work well at all at the trainer sprite proportions so I had to redraw them

Do you need to show the trainers' bodies during battle? Could you just show their heads in the background?

You've been talking about how the human character's personalities interact outside combat. Do you have a variable for their satisfaction/self-esteem? (Basically how happy they are with the tasks they've been assigned.) If A is unhappy with their job, B could be annoyed at A's constant whining while C is glad they're not A. If A is happy, B could be proud to be working with someone skilled and cheerful while C gets all jealous and resentful.

427518000, including doubles like "scorn - spook" and "spook - Scorn", it can easily be off, math's not my forte.

Well, order doesn't seem to matter, so I would cross out doubles. Which still leaves a whole 593775.

Chiming in I guess. I don't think that's how this part of the system works. Not ALL combinations of skills would result in an evolution, as obviously that's insane. Clearly no programmer could or would do that.

However, certain sets of skill TYPES would alter the miasmon's persona, and thus it would evolve. In which case, it's a simple matter of deciding what miasmons would have evolutions, and what skill sets would evolve them.

So for example, Modestoat might have several Water type moves (or whatever type counterpart), therefore equipping 3 of them out of the set would evolve it into a more water-based form. Or you can use the examples Pseudo provides in his post instead. With this idea, the programming is simple: Just check it's skill set as you apply the skills or exit the menu, and evolve them as needed (adding in a hierarchy for when multiple criteria are equipped), or something like that. There's a few ways this could work in the UI alone.

But come on you guys... He's not really saying that one miasmon can have thousands of evolved forms, or one for EACH moveset... Logically that's just completely impossible. The miasmons will likely have one or two evolution paths, same as before, that are fulfilled/reverted by using certain moveset criteria. That's it.

Sure, just seemed funny.
I imagine each essent would have approximatly 6 evolutions, some perhaps shared with other essents.
It would of course be redicule to have an evolution for every single combination, not to mention impossible.
Although it is an interesting concept that personality alters evolution.
Modestoat to Ragestoat (random) would be interesting Mhm.
