I'm wondering whether many people confuse anal-retentive personalities with 'OCD'...
I read an article once by a true OCD sufferer complaining about how such overdiagnosing seemed to 'cheapen' the disorder or something, which caused the writer much frustration, in the same way a homeless vagrant might find it frustrating to hear a billionaire celebrity complain that they 'had it tough', or something.
It was a brilliant article that greatly affected my views on it and similar things, but I can't find it now, which is a shame.

I did however find things like this: ∞ LINK ∞
It's exaggerated to some extent, and some parts are obviously rather tongue-in-cheek, but overall it does paint the picture of the serious form of OCD, which is truly debilitating and very odd.

Sometimes avoiding the cracks in the pavement, or arranging things in an orderly manner on occasion, really doesn't deserve to be called 'OCD' in the same way that having a breakdown because you only turned the doorknob three times instead of four does.

Edit: I've been reading further about this, and it seems that Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder are rather different things, with different levels of severity. Hmm.

I'd agree that there's a certain degree of severity implied in OCD (or CDO as some call it, because it needs to be in alphabetical order :P). I have a friend who would have mental and emotional breakdowns if she bumped into something with her left shoulder, and was unable to duplicate the sensation on her right shoulder (OCD). In contrast, if the floor isn't free of messes, I'm irritated (Anal Retentive).

I quite agree that there are far too many people out there who are all "Oh, I like proper grammar and I'm organized; I must have OCD!" I, at the very least, am certain that I have genuine OCD. When I was younger, I needed EVERYTHING to be symmetrical, and every first step on a new surface/floor/flight of stairs had to be with my right foot and every last step with my left. To this day, whenever I touch one of my fingers against my thumb, I have to touch the other ones to it as well, and then do the same with my other hand; I also can't stand any system (counting things like languages) that is inconsistent in any way.
